The Hermit's Cave, Camberwell.
My new local (and thus, possible LAN party drinking venue), a few minutes lazy
wander from my flat, looked ordinary from the outside, but walking in, I was
struck by a real comfortable 'local' feeling you don't normally get on the high
street, and by a decent beer selection.
The 'standard' selection was a wide range of mostly lagers, from Fosters up to
Leffe, plus 4 guest beers (the landlord assures me they keep 4 on rotation).
Right now the guests are Pride, a cider, 'old rosie' Scrumpy and a guest bitter
called 'Gravesend Shrimpers'.
Tried the Shrimpers first, which was very nice indeed. The Pride was less
impressive. Nothing actually wrong with it, but I've had better pints of Pride.
Still, the complete lack of both a sound system and a tv or projector were a
large bonus, and being able to order without raising my voice (and rapid service
each time) made it a pleasant experience. And I'm curious to try the 'Grogg'
listed on the specials board.
Overall, 7/10, much better than I was expecting from my new local, but it's no
Wenlock.
OK, 8/10. As I was about to hit send, the barstaff intercepted a dodgy DVD
seller who walked in to peddle her wares, throwing her out before she bothered
even a single punter.
